Ensuring patient safety during radiation treatment

Updated: Nov 30, 2019

Kyle Malkoske, the head medical physicist in the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Program in Barrie, Ontario, is the lead author for the recently published technical quality control guidelines for radiation treatment centres (J Appl Clin Med Phys. 2018 Mar; 19(2): 44–47). The guidelines are intended to “outline the performance objectives that equipment should meet in order to ensure an acceptable level of radiation treatment quality” for patients. As a member of the Canadian Organization of Medical Physicists, Dr. Malkoske and his colleagues, along with clinical experts in radiation oncology and radiation technology, are working to ensure the “universal availability of high quality and safe radiotherapy for all Canadians through initiatives aimed at improving quality and mitigating risk.”
